Here, malice is shown as the great troublemaker. Even when there is no clear reason for conflict, hatred looks for one and stirs people up. Such people do the devil’s work when they enjoy setting neighbors against each other through gossip, suspicion, and unfair reports. They fan small sparks of disagreement into a fire and, strangely, seem to enjoy warming themselves by it.

Love is the great peacemaker. It “covers all sins,” meaning it overlooks and softens offenses that might otherwise cause quarrels. Love does not spread a fault around or make it seem worse than it is. Instead, it hides what can wisely be hidden and lessens what can honestly be lessened.

This especially applies to mistakes made without bad intent. If someone wrongs us carelessly or by accident, love can say there was no evil purpose and still hold on to friendship. It also chooses not to dwell on offenses done against us, but to make the best of them. In this way, love prevents strife, or quickly heals it if it has already begun. The apostle Peter says the same thing: “Love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8).
