Proverbs 22:16 - Meaning and Application

This verse shows the evil path that rich people sometimes take. In the end, it can leave them poor and bring God’s judgment on them, even while they still have much. They oppress the poor and give gifts to the rich.

First, they refuse to show charity to the poor. They hold back help from those who need it, thinking they are saving money by cutting away what seems least necessary. But then they spend freely on the rich, giving costly gifts and grand feasts. They may do this out of pride, so others will think highly of them, or as a strategy, hoping to get the favor back with profit. Such people are sure to come to need. Many have ruined themselves through foolish generosity, but no one has ever been ruined by wise charity. Christ tells us to invite the poor to our meals (Luke 14:12, Luke 14:13).

Second, some do more than refuse help. They actively oppress the poor. They rob the needy, force unfair gains from poor tenants and neighbors, and take advantage of those who cannot defend their rights. Then they give bribes to the rich, hoping for protection and support in what they have done. But it is useless. They will still come to want. Those who rob God and make him their enemy cannot protect themselves by paying off the rich to make them their friends.
