The Gospel writer seemed to have finished his account in the previous chapter. But, as Paul sometimes does in his letters, he takes up new material here. He had already said that Jesus did many other signs to prove his resurrection. In this chapter, he gives one of those signs, Christ’s appearance to some of his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, also called the Sea of Galilee.
In this chapter, we see three main parts. First, Jesus shows himself to the disciples while they are fishing. He fills their net, and then he eats with them very openly and kindly from what they caught (John 21:1-14). Second, after dinner, Jesus speaks with Peter, first about Peter himself (John 21:15-19), and then about John (John 21:20-23). Third, the Gospel ends with a solemn closing statement (John 21:24-25).
It is hard to understand why anyone would think this chapter was written by someone else. The chapter itself says that the disciple whom Jesus loved is the one who gives witness to these things (John 21:24).
