Here is the danger in the start of a quarrel. One sharp word, one cross remark, one angry demand, one spiteful answer leads to another, and then another. It keeps growing until it is like cutting a dam, where a small opening lets the water rush through, widen the breach, and sweep everything away. Once it gets that far, it is hard to stop or calm down.
So this verse gives a wise warning. Watch for the first spark of conflict and put it out as soon as it appears. Fear the breaking of the ice, because once it is broken, it will break farther. Do not wait until the quarrel is at its worst, because by then it may be too late. Stop it at the beginning. Resist it at the earliest moment. If possible, leave it off before it even starts.
