Two things are called pleasant here. First, it is pleasant to have the blessing of sight, to see the light of the sun (Ecclesiastes 11:7), and through it to see the wonderful works of God in this world. Those who lack this mercy know how precious it is. How much the light of the eyes can brighten the heart! This should make us thankful for our eyesight.
Second, it is even more pleasant to have a good name, that is, a reputation for what is good with God and with good people. This is like precious ointment (Ecclesiastes 7:1). It gives a quiet joy and a strengthening comfort, like something that makes the bones fat. Some also understand this as meaning it is very comforting to hear a good report about others. A good man has no greater joy than to hear that his friends are walking in the truth.
