A scorner is not just someone who makes fun of God and religion. He also resists the very things meant to correct him and bring him back. One sign of this is that he cannot bear the rebukes of his own conscience. He does not want to look inward, think honestly, or let his heart convict him if he can avoid it. A person is in a sad condition when he is afraid to know himself and reason with himself.
Another sign is that he cannot stand the advice and warning of his friends. He will not go to the wise, because he does not want wise counsel. We should not only welcome wise people when they come to us, but also go to them, like a poor person going to a rich man’s door for help. But the scorner refuses to do this, because he does not want his faults exposed or his life changed.
