This shows that people who cannot bear correction must expect ruin. It is common for those who have known the way of righteousness but have turned away from it to feel deeply insulted when they are rebuked or warned. They become uneasy under correction. They cannot bear it, and they will not bear it. Since they hate being changed, they also hate being corrected and even hate those who deal faithfully and kindly with them.
Of all sinners, backsliders resent correction the most. It is also certain that those who refuse correction will be ruined. Whoever hates reproof and hardens his heart against it is left to his idols, as God says, “Leave him alone.” Such a person will die and perish forever in his sins, since he would not be separated from them. “I know that God has decided to destroy you, because you could not bear to be reproved” (2 Chronicles 25:15). See also (Proverbs 29:1).
