This agrees with (1 Corinthians 2:11): “Who knows a person’s thoughts except the person’s own spirit?” Every person feels his own burden most deeply, especially the kind that presses on the heart and spirit. Such pain is often hidden, because the one suffering keeps it to himself. So we should not judge the griefs of others harshly, because we do not know what they are truly feeling. Their wound may be far worse than their groaning suggests.
The same is true on the other side. Many people have a quiet joy that others do not notice, especially the comfort God gives them in times of prayer and faith. Others may not see it, and they do not share in it. Just as a stranger cannot rightly judge the sorrow of a repentant person, so he cannot rightly judge the joy of a believer.
