Here is, first, the bad sign of a kingdom’s ruin. Where there is no counsel at all, no real discussion, and everything is done in haste, or where there is no wise planning for the public good, but only secret plotting for party interests, the people fall apart. They break into factions, turn against one another, and become an easy target for their common enemies. In war, councils of war are needed for war to be carried on well. Two eyes see more than one, and shared advice should lead to shared help.
Here is, second, the good sign of a kingdom’s prosperity. In a large number of counselors, who know they need one another and work together for the public good, there is safety. One wise person may see what another does not. In our private matters too, it is often helpful to ask many for advice. If they agree, the right path will be clearer. If they differ, we get to hear both sides and are then better able to decide.
