Worldly wealth is what most people set their hearts on, but they often get both the thing and the way to get it wrong. So this verse tells us what kind of wealth is truly worth wanting: not just plenty, but plenty without sorrow. That means no constant worry about gaining or keeping it, no bitterness in using it, no deep grief if it is lost, and no guilt from abusing it. True wealth is to have enough, and also a heart that can enjoy it, use it to do good, and serve God with gladness.
The verse also tells us where this kind of wealth comes from. It does not come from making ourselves slaves to the world (Psalm 127:2), but from the blessing of God. God’s blessing makes a person rich and adds no sorrow with it. What comes from God’s love also comes with God’s grace, which guards the soul from the restless desires and passions that riches often stir up.
The writer had already said that diligent work makes a person rich (Proverbs 10:4), and that is one way God works. But here he reminds us that it is still the Lord who gives the increase. God’s blessing rests on diligent hands. The same is true with spiritual riches, the riches of grace and godliness. We must be diligent in seeking them, but God’s blessing and grace deserve all the credit for what we gain (Deuteronomy 8:17, 18).
