As Christ shows how foolish and evil it is for children to think they do not have to support their parents in some cases (Matthew 15:5), Solomon here shows how foolish and evil it is for people to think it is no sin to rob their parents. They may do this by force or in secret, by flattering them or threatening them, by wasting what they have, or, which is just as bad, by running into debt and leaving their parents to pay it.
This is often treated lightly by unruly children. They say, “It is no wrong, because it will be ours soon enough. Our parents can afford to spare it. We need it. We cannot live like gentlemen on what our parents give us, because it is too little.” With excuses like these, they try to push away conviction.
But no matter how lightly uncontrolled youth treat it, this is truly a great sin. Anyone who does this is the companion of a destroyer, no better than a highway robber. What evil will he not be willing to do, if he will rob his own parents?
