National sins bring national troubles and upset public peace. When a land turns away from God and religion into idolatry, godlessness, or immorality, many rulers arise at once, each claiming power and fighting for it. This tears the people into factions, so they wound and destroy one another. Or rulers may follow one another quickly, one removing another, as in (1 Kings 16:8) and (2 Kings 24:5), or they may be cut off soon by God’s hand or by a foreign enemy.

As the people suffer for the sins of their rulers, so governments also suffer for the sins of the people. Wise people can prevent these troubles or help put things right again. A person of understanding, whether among the people or in authority, can help restore order when confusion has begun. A wise prince, counselor, or state minister can hold back the land’s wrongdoing and use the right means to heal the nation, so its well-being lasts longer. We can hardly imagine how much good one wise person can do for a nation in a time of crisis.
