Religion is true wisdom, and it makes a person wise in every part of life. Whoever carefully keeps God’s law is wise, and he will especially be a wise son. That means he will act with good judgment toward his parents, because God’s law teaches him how to do that.

Bad company is a great obstacle to religion. People who keep company with wild and reckless men, who choose them as close friends and enjoy their talk, will surely be pulled away from obeying God’s law and led into breaking it (Psalm 119:115).

Wickedness is a shame not only to the sinner, but also to his family. A person who keeps loose company and wastes his time and money with them does more than grieve his parents, he brings disgrace on them. It makes them look as if they had failed in their duty to him. They are ashamed that their child should become a disgrace and act badly toward others.
