See here, first, what a servant should care about, even the lowest one sent on an errand and trusted with some task, and even more so a chief agent or ambassador of a prince. He should be faithful to the one who sent him. He must be careful not to betray that trust, whether by mistake or on purpose, and he should do nothing, as far as he can, that harms his master’s interests. Those who act on commission should be as careful as if they were working for themselves.
Second, see how satisfying this is to the master. It refreshes his soul as much as cold snow refreshes workers in harvest time, when they have borne the heat and burden of the day. In hot countries, people would preserve snow by skill through the whole year for this purpose. The more important the matter, and the greater the fear that it might fail, the more welcome the messenger is when he handles it well and succeeds.
A faithful minister, meaning Christ’s messenger, should be just as welcome to us (Job 33:23). At the same time, he will be a sweet aroma to God (2 Corinthians 2:15).
