Here we see, first, the many ways people try to deceive one another, and how the love of money lies behind all these wrongs. In those days, money was commonly weighed on scales. So some used a lighter weight when they paid out money, and a heavier weight when they received it. In the same way, they used a smaller measure when they sold goods and a larger one when they bought. These tricks were done with planning and care, while pretending to act fairly. This includes every kind of fraud and dishonesty in trade.
We also see God’s displeasure against such behavior. Whether it concerns money or goods, whether the buyer is dishonest or the seller is dishonest, it is all an abomination to the Lord. He will not bless business that is carried on in this way, or prosper what is gained by it. He hates those who break the common trust that holds justice together, and he will punish every such wrong.
