A wise person will follow two rules about anger. First, he will not be too quick to resent an offense. Good judgment teaches us to put anger off for a while, to wait before letting it take hold, until we have carefully thought about the wrong, seen it clearly, and weighed it fairly. Then we should still wait before acting on it, so we do not say or do something ugly or foolish. Plato once said to his servant, “I would beat you, but I am angry.” Give anger time, and it will cool.
Second, a wise person will not be too sharp in resenting things. People often think it shows quick wit to notice an insult at once, but Scripture says it is a person’s honor to overlook an offense, to act as if he has not seen it (Psa 38:13), or, if he does choose to notice it, to forgive it and give no thought to revenge.
