This shows how offensive it is to God when people twist justice. It is a sin for those trusted with public justice, such as judges, juries, witnesses, prosecutors, and lawyers, to clear the guilty or condemn the innocent, or even help in either way. That destroys the purpose of government, which is to protect what is good and punish what is evil (Romans 13:3, Romans 13:4). God is just as displeased when someone declares the wicked innocent, even out of pity or to save life, as when someone condemns the righteous.
It is also wrong when private people defend sin and sinners, excuse evil, or argue against virtue and godliness. People do this when they soften wickedness and make it seem harmless. In doing so, they turn people away from the right ways of the Lord and blur the lasting difference between good and evil.
