We are warned not to dread the power of people, whether it is a ruler’s power or the power of a crowd. Both can be frightening, but a slavish fear of either becomes a trap. It can expose people to insults, because some take pleasure in scaring the timid, and it can also lead them into many temptations.
Fear of people has led many to sin. Abraham, because he was afraid of man, denied that Sarah was his wife, and Peter denied his Master, Jesus. Many others have denied their God and their faith for the same reason. We must not turn away from duty or commit sin just to avoid human anger. Even if trouble is coming, we should not be shaken by fear (Daniel 3:16; Psalm 118:6).
Man himself must die (Isaiah 51:12), and at most he can kill the body (Luke 12:5). That is all his power reaches. So we should not give him the place in our hearts that belongs to God alone.
We are also encouraged to trust the power of God. His power keeps us from the fear of people, both the fear that torments and the fear that tempts. Whoever trusts in the Lord for protection and for what he needs while walking in duty will be lifted up, above human power and above fear of it.
A holy confidence in God makes a person steady and calm. It gives a man a noble firmness, and it lets him look with calm disregard on the strongest threats from hell or earth. If God is my salvation, I will trust him and not be afraid.
