Here is the character of a fool: he trusts his own heart. That means he depends on his own wisdom, his own plans, his own strength, his own sense of worth, and the good opinion he has of himself. Anyone who does that is a fool, because he is trusting something that is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9), and something that has already misled him many times.
This also shows what marks a wise person, as in the verse before this one (Proverbs 28:25). A wise person trusts in the Lord, depends on his power and promise, and follows his direction (Proverbs 3:5, 3:6). That kind of person is humble and does not lean on self-confidence.
Here is the comfort of a wise man: the one who walks wisely, who does not trust his own heart but lives in humble dependence on God, will be delivered. The fool who trusts in his own heart will be destroyed.
