Here we see what sin and ruin people bring on themselves when they are drawn in by sinners’ enticements. They take on great guilt. Whoever joins with robbers and cheats, and shares their cause, is guilty with them (Proverbs 1:11). The one who receives stolen gain is as bad as the thief. And when a person is drawn into the crime, he is also drawn into hiding it, even by the worst lies and curses. They hear the warning of an oath to tell the whole truth, but they still refuse to confess.
They also rush toward their own ruin. In that sense, they hate their own souls, because they freely choose what will surely destroy them. See how foolish sin makes people. They love death, which is the most terrible thing, and they hate their own souls, which are the most precious thing they have.
