Here, the sin condemned is bearing false witness against our neighbor, whether in court or in ordinary conversation, against the ninth commandment. The point especially stressed is how harmful this sin is. A false witness can ruin a person’s reputation, but it can also harm their life, their property, their family, and everything precious to them.
A false accusation is dangerous in every way. It is like a club that can crush a man’s head, like a flail against which there is no shield, like a sword that wounds up close, and like a sharp arrow that strikes from far away. Because of this, we should pray, “Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips” (Psalm 120:2).
