We are taught here not to take what belongs to another person, even in secret or by clever fraud. This command reaches more than open theft. It also warns against invading people’s rights, liberties, and fair means of support.
The “ancient landmark” or boundary stone was a fixed sign of where one person’s land ended and another’s began. To move it was to steal land, and it could create lasting quarrels and unrest. Such fraud wrongs your neighbor now, and it passes the wrong on to later generations.
From this, we should also learn to respect old civil customs and settled forms of government. When a practice has stood for a long time, we should be cautious about changing it. A change made in the name of improvement may do more harm than good.
