This thought appeared before (Proverbs 19:25), and it shows two ways a simple person can grow wiser.
One way is by seeing punishment fall on stubborn sinners. When the law is carried out against a scorner, even a simple person is stirred up and warned. He sees more clearly than before how evil sin is, and he takes heed.
The other way is through teaching given to those who are wise and willing to learn. When a wise person is instructed by the preaching of God’s word, he gains knowledge. And the simple person who is listening can also learn from it. It is no wrong at all to take to ourselves a good lesson that was meant for someone else.
