The punishment of mockers can do good to other people. Some people become so fixed in evil that severe efforts to correct them do not change them. Still, those efforts must be made for the sake of others, so they may hear and fear (Deuteronomy 19:20). If the mocker cannot be brought back from sin because the disease has gone too deep, the simple person can still learn not to take the same path. If the punishment does not heal the one who is guilty, it may still keep the infection from spreading.
The correction of wise people also helps them. They do not need to be struck hard, because a word to the wise is enough. Reprove a person who has understanding, and he will understand himself and his own best interest. He will learn from it, gain knowledge, and avoid the same mistake again through carelessness or ignorance. He receives correction kindly and uses it well.
