Here we can see, first, how strong people’s love of money is. They will love almost any man, no matter how unworthy he is, if he has plenty of money and spends it freely, so they can expect to gain from him. Wealth lets a man give many gifts, host many meals, and do many favors, and so it wins him many friends. These friends act as though they love him, because they flatter him and try to please him. But in truth, they love what he has, or rather, they love themselves and hope to profit through him.
Second, we can see how weak people’s love for one another is. A man who was once loved and respected while he prospered, if he falls into poverty, is separated from his neighbor. He is no longer recognized, visited, or cared for. People tell him to keep his distance and say he is a burden. Even someone who had been his neighbor and acquaintance will turn away and pass by on the other side. Since people’s consciences tell them they ought to help such a man, they like to have this excuse, that they never saw him.
