Many people need strong correction. Some children are so stubborn that their parents cannot help them without firm discipline. Some criminals also need the force of the law and public justice. Gentle methods will not work on such people, and they must feel the seriousness of their sin. Even God, in his wisdom, sees that his own children sometimes need very severe suffering and discipline.
Strong rebukes can do a great deal of good. They can work like a corrosive medicine on a wound, burning away unhealthy flesh so healing can begin. In the same way, the rod can drive out the foolishness that is bound up in the heart and wash away evil within.
Yet often those who need the strongest correction are the least able to bear it. Human nature is so corrupt that people dislike being sharply rebuked for their sins almost as much as being beaten until their bones ache. “Correction is painful for the one who leaves the right way,” yet it is good for him (Hebrews 12:11).
