It is easy to find people who only pretend to be kind and generous. Many will call themselves merciful and boast about the good they have done, the good they plan to do, or at least their love for doing good. Most people talk a great deal about their charity, generosity, hospitality, and piety. Like the Pharisees, they sound a trumpet for themselves, and they make a great show of any little goodness they have.
But it is hard to find those who truly are kind and generous, people who have done and will do more than they talk about or even want praised for. Such people are true friends in trouble, and someone you can trust like that is rare, like a black swan.
