Here we see the virtues of a good king. They are mercy and truth, especially mercy, which is named twice here. A king must be strictly faithful to his word, sincere in all he says and does, and he must hate all pretending and deceit. He must also faithfully carry out every trust placed in him, and support what is true.
He should also rule with kindness and leniency. By acts of compassion, he wins the love of his people. Mercy and truth are the glory of God’s throne, and kings are called gods because they represent his authority.
We also see the benefit of these virtues. They will protect the king’s life and strengthen his rule. They will make him secure and at ease, loved by his own people and feared by his enemies, if he has any.
