Here we see the worth of the soul, the great soul of man, the light that gives light to every person. It is a divine light. It is the Lord’s lamp, a lamp of his own lighting, for it is the Spirit of God that gives us understanding. He forms the spirit of man within him. Man was made in God’s image in knowledge.
Conscience, that noble power, acts as God’s representative within the soul. It is a lamp not only lit by him, but lit for him. That is why the Father of spirits is also called the Father of lights.
It is also a light that reveals things. With reason, we come to know other people, judge their character, and see their plans. With conscience, we come to know ourselves. The spirit of a person has self-awareness (1 Corinthians 2:11). It looks into the feelings and desires of the soul, praises what is good, condemns what is evil, and judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
This is the work and power of conscience. For that reason, we should make sure it is rightly informed and keep it clear of offense.
