It is wise in every matter to act with careful thought. We should at least talk things over with ourselves, and in important matters, with our friends too, before we decide. Above all, we should ask God for guidance and pay attention to the direction he gives. That is the way to have a steady mind and firm plans, and to do well in our work. But what is done in haste is often regretted later. Take time, and in the end you will save time. A final decision should always come after careful thinking.
This is especially true when we are considering war. We should think it through and ask for advice before starting a conflict, to see whether it is right, whether it is wise, whether we are strong enough for the enemy, and whether we can continue once retreat is no longer possible (Luke 14:31). And once war has begun, we still need thought and skill, because wise management is as necessary as courage. Even going to court is a kind of war, so it also should be done with good counsel (Proverbs 25:8). The Romans had a rule that said they should neither rush into war nor run from it.
