People who spread rumors are those who quietly carry stories from house to house. The story may have some truth in it, but it is often something that should have been kept private, or it is twisted and presented unfairly. They speak this way on purpose, to damage people’s good name, break friendships, stir up trouble between relatives and neighbors, and set them against each other.
The words of such people are like the wounds of someone who has been hurt. They act as if they are deeply troubled by another person’s failure and speak as if it grieves them. But in truth, they are pleased with the story and tell it with pride and enjoyment. Their words may look harmless on the outside, like a sweet coating on a bitter pill, but they sink deep and do damage inside.
They are also like real wounds, deep and serious wounds in the inner parts of the body. Such wounds can be deadly. In the same way, the words of a tale-bearer injure the person spoken about by hurting his good name and standing, and they injure the one who listens by weakening his love and charity. They can also lead the listener into sin, which wounds the conscience. A person may seem to brush them off, but over time they can quietly turn his heart away from someone he should love.
