A fool may act as if he understands, and may even look for ways to get wisdom. But he does not truly enjoy it. He may study or talk about religion only to please others or protect his reputation. He does not love his book, his work, his Bible, or his prayers. He would rather be wasting time in foolish amusements.
Those who take no pleasure in learning or religion will make little real progress in either. If study and devotion feel like a burden, they will stay shallow. A fool also has no right purpose in seeking wisdom. He only wants his heart to show itself, or to have something to display. He uses words to cover his folly, and he likes the sound of his own voice.
