It is a very happy thing when children become a comfort to their parents. Good children bring rest, make their parents’ lives easier, and free them from many of the worries they once had about them. They also give deep joy to their parents’ hearts. Only those who have this blessing can fully understand the pleasure of seeing the good results of the training they gave their children, and of looking ahead to their children’s good in this life and the next. That joy is fitting, because it answers to the many anxious thoughts parents have had about them.
To reach that kind of outcome, children must be raised with firm discipline and not left to do whatever they want. They should not be allowed to go uncorrected when they do wrong. The foolishness that is naturally in their hearts must be driven out by correction while they are young. If it is not, it will show itself later in ways that bring shame to both them and their parents.
