Proverbs 21:25 - Meaning and Application

Here we see the misery of lazy people, whose hands refuse to do honest work that would give them an honest living. They are just as able to work as anyone else, and work is there for them if they would only apply themselves to it. Yet they will not do it, and they wrongly imagine they are doing well for themselves (Proverbs 26:16). They tell themselves, “Soul, take your ease.” But in truth they are hurting themselves.

Their laziness not only leaves them without the things they need, it also feeds their greedy desires. Their hands refuse to work, but their hearts keep craving riches, pleasures, and honor, things that cannot be gained without effort. Their desires are strong and never satisfied. All day long they keep asking, “Give, give,” expecting everyone else to provide for them, while they do nothing for themselves, and even less for others.

These desires can destroy them. They become a constant trouble and wear them down. They may even push them into dangerous choices to satisfy their wants, and that can lead to an early death. Many people who wanted money to feed sinful living, but would not take the trouble to earn it honestly, have turned to robbery and have died because of it. The same is true for people who are lazy in spiritual matters. If they still long for the good of their souls, those desires will only add to their guilt and stand as witnesses against them. They knew the value of spiritual blessings, but they would not take the trouble needed to receive them.

By contrast, the righteous and hardworking have their desires met, and they find the greater joy of helping others as well. Lazy people are always craving and asking to receive, but the righteous are full and always thinking of ways to give. It is more blessed to give than to receive. They give freely and do not hold back. They give generously, not worried that they will run short, and they keep sharing with others without fearing future lack.
