We should make it a chief concern to keep our souls from tight spots, from being trapped in snares and tangled in troubles. If we do, we can keep control of ourselves and stay fit to serve God. A soul crowded with worry and confusion is not ready for obedience or worship.
Anyone who wants to guard the soul must keep watch at the door of the lips. We must control the mouth by self-control, so no forbidden food enters it, and no stolen water is taken in. In other words, we must not let ourselves overeat or overdrink. We must also guard the tongue, so no sinful word comes out, and no harmful speech passes through the lips.
Careful watch over our words will keep us from many dangers that an uncontrolled tongue brings on people. Guard your heart, and it will help guard your tongue from sin. Guard your tongue, and it will help guard your heart from trouble.
