See here the evil of a sluggish, lazy spirit. It dulls people’s minds and makes them careless about their own affairs. They are like someone in a deep sleep, dreaming a lot but doing nothing. Lazy people waste their time, hide away the abilities God gave them, and live useless lives. They become a burden on the earth, because any service they do while awake is so little that they might as well be asleep.
This laziness also leads to poverty and need. Those who will not work cannot expect to eat, and they will suffer hunger. The verse also warns about a lazy soul, a person who gives no effort to the things of the soul and does not work to seek salvation. Such a person will perish for lack of what is needed for the life and joy of the soul.
