The Gospels give a faithful record of all that Jesus began to do and teach (Acts 1:1). These two belong together. What he taught explained what he did, and what he did confirmed what he taught. In this chapter, then, we have both a miracle and a sermon.
1. The miracle is the healing of a man who had been disabled for thirty-eight years, along with the details of that healing (verses 1-16).
2. The sermon is Christ’s defense of himself before the Sanhedrim, the Jewish ruling council, when he was treated like a criminal for healing the man on the Sabbath day. In this defense, he first declares his authority as the Messiah and the Mediator, the one who stands between God and man, (John 5:17-29). Then he proves that authority by the witness of his Father, John the Baptist, his miracles, and the Old Testament Scriptures, and he rebukes the Jews for their unbelief (verses 30-47).
