A wise person only needs a word. A gentle correction reaches not just the mind, but also the heart, and it has real power over him. If conscience is given even a small prompt, it will take that prompt and follow it through.
But blows are not enough for a fool to make him see his mistake, repent of it, and be more careful afterward. A dull, stubborn person is very rarely helped by harsh treatment. David was softened when Nathan said, “You are the man,” but Pharaoh stayed hardened through all the plagues of Egypt.
