Christ had already warned his disciples in the previous chapter against the false teaching and wrong ideas of the scribes and Pharisees, especially in the way they explained the law. That false teaching was like leaven, a spreading influence that worked through everything (Matthew 16:12). In this chapter, he warns them against their bad behavior.
He especially points out two sins. The scribes and Pharisees did not openly defend these sins in their teaching, but they were clearly guilty of them in daily life, and even drew admiration from others. Those sins are hypocrisy and a worldly mindset, meaning a heart set on earthly things. People who profess faith need to watch against these sins carefully, because they often trouble those who have already escaped the more obvious sins of the world. They are dangerous because they can grow quietly in religious people.
Here Christ warns against hypocrisy. We must not be like the hypocrites or do what they do. He speaks of this first in giving alms, that is, gifts to the poor (Matthew 6:1-4). He then speaks of it in prayer (Matthew 6:5-8). In that section, he also teaches us what to pray for and how to pray (Matthew 6:9-13), and he adds instruction about forgiving others when we pray (Matthew 6:14-15). He also warns against hypocrisy in fasting (Matthew 6:16-18).
He then warns against worldly-mindedness. This shows itself, first, in our choices, which are the ruin of hypocrites (Matthew 6:19-24). It also shows itself in our anxious cares, which often disturb many sincere Christians (Matthew 6:25-34).
