And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:
To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.

These last two verses of this book have a twofold meaning. First, they look back to the prophecy of Jeremiah and show how it was fulfilled (2 Chronicles 36:22). Through Jeremiah, God promised to bring the captives home and rebuild Jerusalem after seventy years, and that set time of favor for Zion finally came. After a long, dark night, the sunrise from heaven visited them. God will prove true to every word he has spoken.
Second, these verses look ahead to the book of Ezra, which begins by repeating them. There, they open a joyful story. Here, they close a very sad one. From this we learn that, though God’s church may be brought low, it is not thrown away. Though his people are corrected, they are not abandoned. Though they are put into the furnace, they are not left there, and not kept there one moment longer than needed for the impurities to be removed.
Though God may deal with his people for a long time, he will not deal with them forever. The people of God will be brought out of Babylon in due time, and even dry bones can be made alive. It may take a long time, but the vision is for an appointed time, and in the end it will speak and not lie. So even if it seems delayed, wait for it.
