In this chapter, the apostle Paul deals with the subject of spiritual gifts, which had been given very generously to the Corinthian church. He explains where these gifts came from, that they are from God. He also shows their variety and their purpose: all of them were meant for one main goal, the spread of Christianity and the building up of the church (1 Corinthians 12:1-11).
He then explains this by comparing the church to the human body, where all the parts have a shared connection and depend on one another. Each part has its own place and use, and none is useless (1 Corinthians 12:12-26).
Paul also teaches that the church is the body of Christ, and that its members are given different gifts for the good of the whole body and of each individual member (1 Corinthians 12:27-30). He ends by urging believers to desire something even more useful than these gifts (1 Corinthians 12:31).
