In this chapter, the apostle rebukes and corrects several serious disorders in the church at Corinth. He deals with the behavior of some women in public worship, who seem to have acted as though they were inspired and laid aside their veils, which in that culture were a common sign of a wife’s submission to her husband. He condemns this practice, tells them to remain veiled, and explains the husband’s authority, while still reminding husbands that both man and woman were made to help and comfort each other (verses 1-16).
He then reproves them for the divisions, selfishness, and disregard for the poor shown at the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:17-22). To correct these shameful abuses, he sets before them the meaning and purpose of this holy ordinance. He then instructs them how they should come to it and warns them about the danger of behaving as they had, and of receiving it in an unworthy way (1 Corinthians 11:23- end).
