David here praises God’s goodness and gives him the honor for it: “You are good, and you do good.” Everyone who knows God at all, and has any dealings with him, must admit that he does good. From that, we rightly conclude that he is good. God’s goodness flows out in so many ways, and so fully, strongly, and freely to all his creatures, that we must believe the source within himself is endless.

We cannot begin to measure how much good our God does each day, and even less can we measure how good he is. So we should acknowledge this with wonder, holy love, and thankfulness.

David then asks for God’s grace and asks to live under its guidance and power: “Teach me your statutes.” He is saying, “Lord, you do good to everyone, and you are the generous giver to all your creatures. This is the good I ask you to do for me: teach me what my duty is, incline my heart toward it, and help me do it. You are good and do good, so teach me your statutes, that I may be good and do good, have a good heart, and live a good life.”

This gives hope to poor sinners that God will teach them his way, because he is good and upright (Psalms 25:8).
