Here David gives glory to God first, and then he asks for grace. “Blessed are you, O Lord,” he says. God is infinitely happy in himself and does not need David’s help or service. Yet God is pleased to count those things as honorable to him. So David asks, “Help me, and then accept me.” In all our prayers, we should mix praise with our requests.
Then he asks God to teach him. “Teach me your statutes,” he says. In other words, “Show me my duty in everything, and give me grace to do it.” God is the source of all blessing, so David asks for this one blessing from that endless fullness. He wants to learn God’s ways so that he can praise God rightly, and so that he may find his own blessing in God.
