David says that God is good to all creatures, according to their needs and ability to receive. As the heavens are full of God’s glory, so the earth is full of his mercy, with many signs of his kindness and care. This is true not only in the land of Canaan, where God was known and worshiped, but across the whole earth, even in places where people do not honor him. God’s mercy reaches beyond human beings, because even the lesser creatures share in his goodness. “His tender mercies are over all his works.”
From that truth, David asks God to be good to him in the way he needs most, by teaching him his statutes. He reasons that if God feeds the young ravens when they cry, giving them food suited to them, then God will surely give him the spiritual food he needs. David’s soul longs for the bread of life, and he cannot live well without it. The earth is full of God’s mercy, and so is heaven, where there are spiritual blessings. A gracious heart can use anything as a reason to ask for God’s help in learning his word. The God who does not leave his birds unfed will not leave his children untaught.
