This gives us a picture of the happiness of good people, those who are guided by love for God’s word. They take it as their rule, and they let it shape their lives.
They are also calm and at peace in a holy way. No one enjoys life more than they do. “Great peace” belongs to those who love God’s law, because they find deep satisfaction in doing what is right and in thinking about it afterward. The work of righteousness brings peace (Isaiah 32:17), a peace the world cannot give or take away.
They may face great troubles on the outside and still have great peace within. There is, as the old phrase says, abundance of inner light. People who love the world often end up frustrated, because the world does not meet their hopes. But those who love God’s word have peace, because it gives them more than they expected and gives them firm ground to stand on.
They are also safe, with a holy sense of security. Nothing will become a snare, a stumbling block, or a cause of lasting ruin for them. No event in God’s providence will be an unshakable temptation or an unbearable hardship to them, because their love for God’s word helps them keep their integrity and their peace.
They will make the best of what comes and will not argue with what God does. Nothing will ultimately harm them, because all things work together for their good, and that helps them accept what comes. When holy love rules the heart, people are not quick to burden themselves with unnecessary doubts, nor to take offense at their brothers and sisters (1 Corinthians 13:6, 1 Corinthians 13:7).
