Here we see, first, the great purpose for which God’s word was given: to give light, that is, to give understanding. It helps us know what we need as we travel through this world. It is also the outward, ordinary means by which the Holy Spirit gives light to the minds of those who are made holy.
God’s testimonies are wonderful because of their greatness, but they are also useful, like a light in a dark place. They are not only amazing to think about, but practical for daily life. This is the use God intended for his word, and it serves that purpose well.
Even the entrance of God’s word gives light. If we begin at the beginning and read it carefully, we find that the very first verses of the Bible give surprising and satisfying answers about the origin of the world, things the world would otherwise know nothing about. As soon as God’s word comes into us and finds a place in us, it begins to enlighten us. We start to see clearly when we begin to study the Scriptures.
Even the first principles of God’s words, the plain truths, the milk meant for children in the faith, bring much light to the soul. How much more will the soul be enlightened by the deeper mysteries found there. The explanation of God’s word gives light, and it is most useful when ministers do their part in making the sense clear (Nehemiah 8:8). Some take this to mean the New Testament, which opens up the Old Testament and gives light about life and immortality.
God’s word can also give understanding even to the simple, to those with the weakest minds. It shows us the way to heaven so clearly that even wayfaring people, though they are foolish, will not go astray there.
