Here you can see how David felt about God’s word. He admired it because it is most excellent in itself: “Your testimonies are wonderful.” God’s word gives wonderful insight into God, Christ, and the world to come. It also gives wonderful proof of God’s love and grace. Its noble language, pure message, and well-ordered parts are all wonderful. Its power on human consciences, both to convict and to comfort, is wonderful too. If we do not admire God’s testimonies, it is a sign that we do not know them well, or do not understand them.
David also held firmly to the word because it was always useful to him. “Therefore my soul keeps them,” as a treasure of priceless worth that he could not do without. We gain nothing unless our souls keep God’s word. It must be stored deep within us, like the tablets of testimony in the ark, and given the highest place in our hearts. Those who see God’s word as wonderful will value it highly and guard it carefully, because they expect great things from it.
