John has heard a good report about Gaius from the brothers. Gaius’s love for fellow believers, and his kindness to strangers, showed that his faith was real. His welcome was not limited to people from his own church, but extended to Christians from other places too.
John speaks warmly of Gaius’s hospitality, because it was a true Christian virtue. He was glad to hear that Gaius was walking in the truth, that is, living in a way shaped by the gospel. This is the kind of joy faithful ministers feel when they see their hearers living out what they profess.
John then encourages Gaius to keep helping the brothers on their way in a godly manner. This means supporting traveling believers with care, generosity, and Christian love. Such help is part of practical faith, especially for those who are serving the Lord away from home.
These brothers had gone out to preach for God’s sake, and they accepted nothing from the Gentiles, meaning unbelievers or those outside the church. John’s point is that the church should support such workers. They spread the truth, and it is right that God’s people provide for them.
