It is a shame if anyone who comes to court as a poor person does not have a just cause, because Scripture has made such people the special care of justice. Their case should get a fair hearing, and the judge himself should be on their side, just as he would be for a prisoner and for a poor man.
Here the righteous judge is described as one who pays attention to the case of the poor. It is every person’s duty to care for the poor (Psalm 41:1), but judges have a special duty to give poor people’s cases careful attention. They should work just as hard to discover the truth in a poor man’s case as they would in a rich man’s.
A wise concern for justice should make both judge and lawyer work hard for the poor person, as if they expected great gain from it. On the other hand, the wicked man shows his character by ignoring a poor man’s case because there is nothing to profit from it. He does not even care to learn the facts clearly, since he does not care whether the matter goes right or wrong (Job 29:16).
